What the statute actually says
Alberta calls e-bikes 'power bicycles': they need operable pedals, an electric motor of up to 500 watts, and a top assisted speed of 32 km/h, with no weight restriction (unlike mopeds, which must weigh 35-55 kg). The minimum operating age is 12, and no driver's licence, registration or insurance is required. A helmet is mandatory - historically a motorcycle helmet, though Alberta's cycling safety-equipment guidance now lets power-bicycle riders wear an approved bicycle helmet instead.
